2010 Winter Solstice

Occurring at 6:38 p.m. ET Tuesday, the 2010 winter solstice marks the official beginning of winter in the Northern Hemisphere. The shortest day of the year boasts the year's longest shadows and fewest daylight hours.

I took this photo in 2005 while on a walk in the country near our lake home. It was getting very late in the afternoon and I liked the lighting and the way the sun shone rather bleakly through this tree. When I contemplated the Winter Solstice today, I knew this was the photo I just had to use. This year, even though I'm in the city, I'm going to get out there just before sunset to see what beauty I can capture to remember this mystical day. Then, when I get home, I'll light some candles and celebrate the fact that starting tomorrow, the days will be getting longer and longer.
