Father's Day Fun and Creative Gifts

Producing my dad's old-school custom T with the poster-lettered brilliance, "Laura, Jimmy, Tim and Tasha's Dad," included an adventure to that T-shirt place at the mall. Remember the store? Most likely named "The T-shirt Place (or Factory, or Shop)," it was collaged floor to ceiling with unicorns, big-eyed kittens and REO Speedwagon wings, and filled with the intoxicating aroma of ink and glue. I'm guessing my mom struggled to get us out of there without a Spuds Mackenzie T. Giving kids ownership of a Father's Day gift is tricky. This year's suggestion from my 4-year old daughter required some interpretation and "guidance," but came full-circle to the T-Shirt, sans the glitter rainbows:

Me: What do you want to give Daddy for Father's Day?

4-year old: Something scary. With skeletons. A scary coloring book

Me: How about a T-shirt with a skull on it?

4-year old: Ummmmm, yes, like this.

At this point, she grabbed her big drawing pad, a purple rollerball, and drew her skeleton masterpiece. Knowing her dad better than I thought, she requested a black T-shirt. I scanned her design, uploaded it to CafePress and voila! An original masterpiece, sans rainbows and glitter letters. My girl picked the American Apparel T, so this shirt's starting at $27 before CafePress coupons, cash back, or CafePress credits.

The chef's apron: This one is especially fun with pictures of your kids that they'll hate when they'e 13, like the classic food on the face photo. Most photo printing sites like Zazzle offer gift options at a reasonable price. This apron with photo will run you around $30 before adding Zazzle coupons and cash back.

The cash containment unit: Of course there's the monogrammed money clip, a classic gift for a classic dad. Engraved money clips start around $20 on sites like Things Remembered and RedEnvelope.

Fathers Day Breakfast in Bed

Treat your husband to something special!  Have your children help.  Make the shopping list and go to the store together.  Have your kids help gather the items needed to make his breakfast. Now, let them help you make him that fabulous breakfast in bed! Let them write little notes to him or write "I love you Daddy" on the napkin.  Instead of a little vase of a flower maybe go unique with a vase and a cigar or screwdriver.  :)  Make it manly.

Here are some breakfast ideas for you to make that will sure make a smile on his face!  All these recipes were taken from my favorite website allrecipes.com and they were the top rated recipes (so you know they got to be good!!)  :)

Banana Crumb Muffins
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 bananas, mashed

3/4 cup white sugar

1 egg, lightly beaten

1/3 cup butter, melted

1/3 cup packed brown sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter

 Directions
1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease 10 muffin cups, or line with muffin papers.

2.In a large bowl, mix together 1 1/2 cups flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, beat together bananas, sugar, egg and melted butter. Stir the banana mixture into the flour mixture just until moistened. Spoon batter into prepared muffin cups.

3.In a small bowl, mix together brown sugar, 2 tablespoons flour and cinnamon. Cut in 1 tablespoon butter until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal. Sprinkle topping over muffins.

4.Bake in preheated oven for 18 to 20 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of a muffin comes out clean.


Clone of a Cinnabon
Ingredients
1 cup warm milk (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
2 eggs, room temperature
1/3 cup margarine, melted

4 1/2 cups bread flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup white sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons bread machine yeast

1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 1/2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/3 cup butter, softened

1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt

Directions
1.Place ingredients in the pan of the bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select dough cycle; press Start.

2.After the dough has doubled in size turn it out onto a lightly floured surface, cover and let rest for 10 minutes. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and cinnamon.

3.Roll dough into a 16x21 inch rectangle. Spread dough with 1/3 cup butter and sprinkle evenly with sugar/cinnamon mixture. Roll up dough and cut into 12 rolls. Place rolls in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking pan. Cover and let rise until nearly doubled, about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

4.Bake rolls in preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes. While rolls are baking, beat together cream cheese, 1/4 cup butter, confectioners' sugar, vanilla extract and salt. Spread frosting on warm rolls before serving.

Fluffy Pancakes
Ingredients
3/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
2 tablespoons butter, melted
cooking spray

Directions
1.Combine milk with vinegar in a medium bowl and set aside for 5 minutes to "sour".

2.Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk egg and butter into "soured" milk. Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients and whisk until lumps are gone.

3.Heat a large skillet over medium heat, and coat with cooking spray. Pour 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto the skillet, and cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula, and cook until browned on the other side.

Cheesy Ham and Hash Brown Casserole
Ingredients
1 (32 ounce) package frozen hash brown potatoes

8 ounces cooked, diced ham
2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed cream of potato soup
1 (16 ounce) container sour cream
2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan cheese

Directions
1.Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

2.In a large bowl, mix hash browns, ham, cream of potato soup, sour cream, and Cheddar cheese. Spread evenly into prepared dish. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

3.Bake 1 hour in the preheated oven, or until bubbly and lightly brown. Serve immediately.

Easy Bacon and Cheese Quiche
Ingredients
1 (3 ounce) can bacon bits

1/2 cup chopped onion

5 ounces shredded Swiss cheese
3 ounces grated Parmesan cheese
1 (9 inch) deep dish frozen pie crust
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup half-and-half cream

Directions
1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

2.In a medium bowl, mix the bacon, onions, and both cheeses. Place this mixture in the unthawed pie crust.

3.Mix the eggs and half and half in a bowl. Pour the egg mixture over the cheese mixture.

4.Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and bake for an additional 35 minutes, until top of quiche begins to turn brown.

French Toast Casserole
Ingredients
5 cups bread cubes
4 eggs
1 1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup white sugar, divided
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon margarine, softened
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions
1.Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly butter an 8x8 inch baking pan.

2.Line bottom of pan with bread cubes. In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, 2 tablespoons sugar, salt and vanilla. pour egg mixture over bread. Dot with margarine; let stand for 10 minutes.

3.Combine remaining 2 tablespoons sugar with 1 teaspoon cinnamon and sprinkle over the top. Bake in preheated oven about 45 to 50 minutes, until top is golden.

Whole Grain Waffles 
Ingredients
2 eggs, beaten
1 3/4 cups skim milk
1/4 cup canola oil

1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup flax seed meal
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt

Directions
1.In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, applesauce, and vanilla. Beat in whole wheat pastry flour, flax seed meal, wheat germ, all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt until batter is smooth.

2.Preheat a waffle iron, and coat with cooking spray. Pour batter into waffle iron in batches, and cook until crisp and golden brown.

Father's Day THEMED Gift Ideas!

Buying for you husband for Fathers Day can be difficult.  If you ask them what they want they(mine) usually will come back with..  "new motorcycle, kindle, newest game system, oh... how about that 3D tv".  Yeah right!  Why can't they ask for kitchen towels, candles, chocolates... you know... the easy stuff like we ask for.  :)  So I give up asking him anymore.  Always ends up me just shrugging my shoulders asking myself why did I even bother.  Most of the time he doesn't know what he wants anyways.  :) 

So why not fill a bucket... YES a bucket filled with goodies for him!!  You can never have enough buckets.  You can even buy a metal bucket to be reused for a beverage holder on your patio when you have guests over or how about one of the collapsible trash cans that they can reuse for camping or at the beach!  Depending on the theme there are so many options that you can use to fill your gifts in.
