Beauty Tip For Moms - Bed Time Snack

“Sleepis Nature’s sweet restorer. Never forget that it is during sleep, that yourmind and nerves re-charge and rebuild themselves. Taking something light to eator drink at bedtime is the time-honored aid to good sleep. There are somephysiological reasons for this. One of them is that food in the stomach setsthe digestive processes in action, and the circulatory system automaticallysends more blood to the digestive organs and less to the muscles. Almost everyonehas had the experience of feeling sleepy after a meal. A great many foods thatare part of a wholesome diet contribute to the healthy relaxation of muscle andnerve, but three are especially valuable. These are vitamin B-6, calcium andvitamin D. Foods rich in these are my favorite tranquility foods. Vitamin B-6appears to be a specific sedative for twitchy nerves. A lack of calcium may beone of the hidden causes of insomnia so try a mug of plain hot milk as a potenttranquilizer at bedtime.” This is the remedy my grandmother used to give usgrandkids and we loved it as a comfort bedtime drink with just a little bit ofNestlé’s chocolate…yummm!

Simple and Beautiful Hair

Rememberthe movies that picture the female stars sitting in front of a mirrored vanitybrushing her hair before going to bed? One reason this piece of furniture wasof value was that if offered a relaxing place for women to care for their beauty, one of being their hair, before retiring for the evening.

GaylordHauser recommends, “It is actually notnecessary to wash your hair too often. (Shampoos can strip the natural oilsthat make the hair lustrous and healthy). Brushing your hair and scalp 50 to100 strokes each night keeps the hair clean and you will have given apreparation (that of a natural massage from a brush with natural bristles) toyour scalp with natural oils and lanolin. However, if you prefer to wash yourhair more frequent;  beforeshampooing, give your scalp this simple beauty treatment. Take a tablespoon ofyour nice fresh vegetable oil, the same kind you use in your food, and massageit into your scalp. Wring out a towel in very hot water, wrap it around yourhead, and leave it on for five minutes. Then wash with an oil-lanolin baseshampoo. Lather and rinse once or twice, depending on how much hair you have orto your liking.”

Time to Plant Halloween Pumpkins?

Growing pumpkins in the garden can be a lot of fun, especially for children who may use them for carving their jack-o-lanterns at Halloween. But, as many gardeners know, successfully growing pumpkins in the garden for Halloween pumpkins can be difficult to do. With a few pumpkin growing tips, you can grow perfect Halloween pumpkins in your garden.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #1 – Plant at the right time
Many gardeners will tell you that growing pumpkins is easy. It is keeping the pumpkins from rotting before Halloween that is hard. Mature pumpkins will rot quickly, so it is important to make sure your pumpkin is ripe right at Halloween. The best time for planting pumpkins depends on the variety and your climate. Normally, in the North, you should be planting pumpkins in mid to late May. In warmer, Southern climates (where pumpkins grow rapidly), you should probably be planting pumpkins in June.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #2 – Give your pumpkin lots of room
Growing pumpkins requires a lot of room. Many pumpkin plants can grow to be 30 to 40 feet long. If you don’t provide enough room for your pumpkin plant, you may cause it to shade and weaken itself, which makes the plant more susceptible to disease and pests.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #3 – Pumpkins love sunshine
Plant your pumpkins where they will get lots of sun. The more the better.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #4 – Pumpkins love water
While growing pumpkins will tolerate some drought, it is best to make sure that they get regular watering. Make sure your pumpkin plants get 2 – 4 inches of water a week. Supplement with the hose if you are not getting this much rainfall.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #5 – Plant your Pumpkins with Companions
Squash bugs are the #1 killers of pumpkin vines. To help repel them from your pumpkin plant, plant some companion plants near your pumpkin plant. Catnip, radishes, nasturtiums, marigolds, petunias and mint are all plants that squash bugs do not like and will keep squash bugs from the growing pumpkins.

Halloween Pumpkin Growing Tip #6 – Keep the Stem
When you harvest your pumpkin plant, make sure you leave a good, long piece of the stem on the pumpkin. Once you cut potential Halloween pumpkins from the vine, a “handle” or stem will help slow the rotting process.

Conclusion
With these pumpkin growing tips, you should have a much better chance of growing all the Halloween pumpkins you could want. Remember also, not only is growing pumpkins fun, but after Halloween, they make a great addition for your compost pile.

Freshen Up a Sickroom

Karen Pecota
24/7 MOMS Writer

Freshen Up a Sickroom – “Dip a cotton ball into eucalyptus oil (available at health food stores), put it on a little dish and place it on a surface (not near an open window or a draft) in the room where someone is recovering. Eucalyptus oil is said to generate ozone. It’s also a strong antiseptic. The oil has a powerful scent, so before you do this, be sure the sick person agrees to having it there.”

Beautiful Hands

24/7 MOMS weekly Beauty quote:
By: Karen Pecota

“The hands are always on parade, and their defects cannot be covered by makeup. The hands, even more than the face, are constantly exposed to wind, weather and irritants, and need special attention. One reason the hands often look older than the face is that the skin of the hands has fewer oil cells than the skin on the face; therefore the skin on the hands dries out much more quickly.

To counteract the excessive drying effects of detergents and soaps, women must give special outside attention to their hands. Here are a few daily tips:

1. Dermatologists tell us that most household tasks could be done with only half as much detergent as women ordinarily use.

2. Fatty soaps are kinder to the hands.

3. For hard working hands - after washing the hands with soap and water, you can help the skin re-establish its normal healthy acid mantle with a few drops of lemon juice massaged into the skin on your hands.

There is nothing surprising about these facts but keep in mind that the skin on both the hands and face depends upon sound nutrition.”

Beautiful Eyes

Did you know that your eyes were made to be beautiful? “They sparkle like jewels with their own moisture. Whether they are brown or blue, gray or green or hazel, they are the only natural spots of true color in the face. And consider their setting. Could any jeweler do better for his finest gem than that shining white background, that frame of lashes, that shadowy hollow between cheekbone and eyebrow ridge? While above, the eyebrow sweeps up and out in emphasis, final flourish of the artist’s brush! If they never expressed a thought or communicated an emotion, your eyes would still be beautiful.

Attached to your eyeballs are those six fine, silk-like little muscles which can be exercised and strengthened like all other muscles of the body. Here are two simple eye drills, which take only a few minutes a day that can greatly improve the looks and function of the eyes:

1. Turn your head from side to side as if saying an emphatic “no.” Do this ten times.

2. Hold your index finger or a pencil about ten inches away from your eyes. Look at its tip, then into the distance. Do this ten times.”
